I am from Eastern Ontario, I was born in the town of Picton in 1961, but growing up lived in many places including the United States in 1965 and in the United Kingdom from 1968-1970. My formative years were spent in the Ottawa Valley.

After finishing high school I enrolled at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Following graduation from Queen's University, where I completed studies for a B.A. in sociology in 1986, I continued my university studies, enrolling in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in 1990. I graduated with a Master of Library and Information Science degree in 1993.

I settled in Ottawa to seek my fortune and following a series of terms of employment under contract in various libraries in and around Ottawa I secured a full-time position with the Carleton University Library in 2000.

I met Mika in an online chat room, Gay Ottawa. We got acquainted with one another in a series of chats over many weeks. I finally found the courage to ask Mika to meet in person. Mika is twelve years younger than me and I feared he would brush me off, but to my joy Mika accepted the invitation. We first  met in person at a local Second Cup on a Sunday afternoon in August 1998 and remain together ever since.
